How to Play PS5 Games on Your Laptop’s Screen or Desktop’s Monitor

Until recently, the only way to play PlayStation 5 games on your laptop or desktop screen was to use a PlayStation 2 (or later) adapter from your console, a USB cable, and the PlayStation 5 beta. That’s about to change. While Sony hasn’t shared when exactly the PlaySation 5 will be available to the public, it announced at the Game Developers Conference last month that the console is coming.

It has been rumored that Sony will release the PlayStation 5 early next year. It’s rumored to be called the PlayStation 5, and it’s rumored to be released in 2019. We don’t know much, but we do know that it will not be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 4. Sony is establishing a new platform that is backward compatible with the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3. The new PlayStation 5 is rumored to be the first PlayStation to be able to play games on a laptop or desktop’s monitor.

The PS5 specs are already out there so there is no need to post a long intro. Just a summary and how to do it.

PlayStation 5 games are best played on a large TV screen, but if for some reason that’s not possible, I can help you play PS5 games on your laptop or desktop monitor. Because, yes, it’s possible.

There are several options for playing PS5 games on your monitor, each with their own pros and cons, and some easier than others.

The easiest way to play PlayStation 5 games on your laptop or desktop is by streaming them through the PS Remote Play application. The application is available for Windows and Mac. Once setup is complete, log into your PSN account and it will automatically search for PS5 consoles ready to stream to your laptop or desktop.

In order for the app to see your PlayStation 5, you must first enable Remote play on your console.

To do this, go to the System – Remote Playback menu in the console settings and enable the Remote Playback option. Here we go! That’s all you need to do to stream PS5 games to your laptop or desktop.

You need a reliable internet connection to stream, and we’ve found that there is at least some latency at the moment. In most cases, this isn’t a critical factor, but if you play FPSs where every millisecond counts, it can be frustrating.

You can reduce latency and other potential problems by connecting the PS5 directly to your router with an Ethernet cable, and ideally to a laptop or desktop computer. That way you’ll get the best possible speed – but mobility will be limited, and you may need to buy Ethernet cables (related link) if you don’t have them available.

However, the method described above, using the PS Remote Play application, is the easiest way to turn your laptop or desktop screen into a PS5 monitor.

However, if you don’t have a reliable internet connection or just want to try a different approach, you have an alternative. It uses a capture card to transfer the signal from the PlayStation 5 to the laptop screen.

To play PS5 games on a laptop screen with acapture card

If you want to avoid the lag and connection issues that can occur when using the PS Remote Play app, you can invest in a capture card.

These cards are often used by streamers and those who record their games for platforms like Twitch or YouTube. The main goal is to stream video from your console to your laptop screen (or desktop screen) without delay or interruption.

The downside is that they are not very cheap, but at least they are reliable and have no delays – provided you get a good product.

Our recommended capture card (link below)

The Elgato HD60 S frame grabber (partner link) is a great frame grabber that seamlessly transfers video from your PlayStation 5 to your laptop. It’s a bit expensive, but it works very well, and it’s still much cheaper than buying a new TV…..

You can also try to buy one of the cheaper capture cards on the market, but these can introduce additional problems such as latency and overheating. It all depends on the type of games you play and how long you’ve been playing. But from my personal experience, there should be no problem with Elgato.

To connect a capture card to a PS5 and a laptop computer

It’s very simple and is explained in the capture card’s manual, but here’s what you need to do (the instructions are based on the Elgato HD60 S, but will be similar for most capture cards):

1. Connect the USB-C cable to the capture card and the other end to a USB 3.0 port on your laptop or desktop computer. For best performance, connect it to a USB 3.0 port, not an older port!

2. Connect an HDMI cable to the PS5 and the other end to the HDMI IN connector on the capture card.

3. Connect another HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT connector on the card and the other end to a laptop or PC monitor.

Here we go! Now you can play PlayStation 5 games on your laptop or desktop without any lag. This is slightly more complicated (and expensive) than simply using the remote reading option, but the advantage of this method is that it is more reliable.

Can’t I just connect my PS5 to my laptop via an HDMI cable?

This would be the easiest, but in almost all cases (with a few exceptions) this is not possible.

You can’t connect the PS5 to a laptop with an HDMI cable, because both devices have HDMI outputs. To receive the video signal from the PlayStation console, your laptop must have an HDMI port and few laptops have this port.

I also tried using an HDMI male-to-female adapter and getting the laptop to accept the video signal that way, but that didn’t work. This would be much easier than investing in a cheap capture card yourself, but it just doesn’t work.

(If you managed to do this with an HDMI male-to-female adapter, please let us know in the comment box below).

Conclusion

The easiest way to play PS5 games on your laptop or desktop is with the PS Remote Play app, available for Windows and Mac. You will indeed need a reliable internet connection, and there will be some hiccups along the way – or at least occasionally – but this method is still the easiest and cheapest.

Buying a capture card brings more stability – even with a cheap card – but even the cheapest cards cost more than the free ones.

But it’s up to you to decide which of these two options is best for you. Try remote reading first, as it is available immediately, and if you are not satisfied with the performance, you can try another method.

The PS Remote Play feature will likely feel inadequate when playing online multiplayer games, especially survival and FPS games where a split second counts, but you won’t know for sure until you try it out.

The good thing is that you have a choice and it’s not a complicated process in the end.
